Jiang Hills, which in ancient times was granted to a descendant of the
legendary emperor Zhuang Xu. Later, during the Spring and Autumn
period (722–481 bc), when the Jiang Hills administration
was defeated by the state of Chu, the defeated ruling class took Jiang
as their surname.
- Chinese: from the name of the
state of Jiang, in present-day Henan province. The Duke of Zhou was
the younger brother and chief adviser of Wu Wang, who established the
Zhou dynasty in 1122 bc; his third son, Bo Ling, was granted
lordship of the state of Jiang. Bo Ling’s descendants eventually
adopted Jiang as their surname.
- Chinese: from
the name of the Jiang Creek, a tributary of the Wei river in Shaanxi
province. This surname goes back 4700 years to Shen Nong, a legendary
emperor (2734–2697 bc). Shen Nong was raised beside Jiang
Creek, and adopted Jiang as one of his names.
