The second account traces it to Xiang Fu, a son of a duke of the State of Song during the Spring and Autumn period (722–481 bc).
  2. Chinese: from the name of an ancient state of Xiang. Following the defeat of this state, its residents adopted its name as their surname.
  3. Chinese: from the name of Xiang, the fifth king of the Xia dynasty (2205–1766 bc).
