The Top Baby Girl Name Trends of 2023

This year we saw a number of girls with old-fashioned girl names. Eleanor, Abigail and Victoria are all classic girl names that made the top 50!

Plant and flower names for girls like Violet and Hazel were trending in 2023. Previously uncommon girl names like Luna, the Roman goddess of the moon, and Maeve, the Irish fertility goddess, also became more popular monikers in 2023.

Biblical girl names also had a resurgence in popularity. One of the most surprising previously uncommon girl names in the top 100 is Genesis at #65!

Girl names also had more of a tomboy twist in 2023 with old-fashioned and traditionally masculine names like “Billie” and “Max” becoming more common choices as a name for girls this year than in previous decades. This shift to choosing more unisex names makes sense when considering the rise of gender-neutral names for boys and girls across the board.

According to our own data, these have been the most popular girl name lists on our website in 2023:

Girl Names on the Rise in 2023

According to the most recent Social Security Administration data, these were some of the most notable names rising in popularity for 2023 :

  • Wrenlee is the fastest-growing girl name in popularity. It moved up 708 spots in popularity from position 1420 to 712  in just one year!
  • Other girl names with the largest positive change include Neriah, Arlet, Georgina, Amiri, Arleth, and Winona.

In 2023, the letter “A” was the most popular girl name trend! EIGHT of the top ten girl names end with “A” – Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, and Luna! And a majority of the fastest-growing girl names started with the letter A as well!

Three-syllable girl names also seem to be on the rise, with many of the top 100 girl names following this pattern.

Girl Names on the Decline in 2023

According to the most recent Social Security Administration data:

  • Tatiana had the most significant decline, dropping 287 ranks from 993 to 1280
  • Other girl names with the most notable drop-offs include Alaiya, Jaylene, Aarna, Zoie, and Paityn
  • Girl names ending in Y also declined in popularity with Ainsley, Kaisley, and Kassidy all dropping in 2023.

One of the most interesting girl name trends in 2023 was the decline in patriotic girl names. Both Justice and Liberty dropped over 100 spots on the 2023 baby girl name list.

Karen, which was not terribly popular to begin with, also dropped significantly, presumably because it became a popular meme and derogatory term for an entitled and out-of-touch woman.

Choosing the perfect baby name for your little girl can seem like one of the most daunting tasks during pregnancy. Every name reminds you of someone or has some positive or negative association that you may or may not want to incorporate into your baby's identity. That's why browsing top baby girl name lists like this one can help inspire you and even introduce you to trending names that you may have not considered before.

You've done everything from stocking her closet to building the crib for your new little girl, but you haven't chosen a name yet. Is she going to be more of a Luna or a Victoria? What about Amelia?
